How to Cross-Hire Your Aircraft for Passive Income

How to Cross-Hire Your Aircraft for Passive Income

Not every aircraft owner wants to sell. Sometimes you just want the aircraft to start earning money while you still keep ownership.

One of the simplest ways to do this is cross-hiring your aircraft.

What is Cross-Hiring?

Cross-hiring means you allow another pilot or operator to use your aircraft for a fee, while you remain the owner.

It can be a good middle ground between:

  • Keeping the aircraft parked and costing you money, or
  • Selling it completely

Done properly, it can create a steady stream of passive income.

Why Some Owners Prefer Cross-Hiring

There are a few practical reasons owners choose this option:

  • You keep ownership of the aircraft
  • You can earn income to help cover hangar, insurance, and maintenance costs
  • You stay in control of who uses the aircraft and under what conditions
  • It’s often easier and faster than selling

For many private owners, this is a sensible alternative when they’re not ready to sell but don’t want the aircraft sitting idle.

What You Need to Get Right

Cross-hiring only works well if you protect yourself. Here are the main things to sort out:

1. A proper written agreement Never allow someone to use your aircraft on a handshake. You need clear terms covering:

  • Hire rates
  • Who pays for fuel and maintenance
  • Insurance requirements
  • Damage responsibility
  • Cancellation terms

2. Insurance Your normal private insurance may not cover commercial or hire use. You must check (and usually upgrade) your policy before any cross-hire starts.

3. Maintenance & records Decide who is responsible for routine maintenance and how the aircraft must be returned after each hire.

4. Pilot requirements Set minimum experience levels and make sure only approved pilots can fly the aircraft.

Is Cross-Hiring Right for You?

Cross-hiring works best when:

  • Your aircraft is in good condition
  • You’re happy with other people flying it
  • You want income without the hassle of a full sale

It is not ideal if you want the aircraft exclusively for your own use, or if you’re not prepared to manage the extra admin and insurance.

Bottom Line

You don’t always have to sell your aircraft to stop it costing you money. Cross-hiring can turn it into a source of passive income while you keep ownership.

Just make sure you have a proper agreement, the right insurance, and clear rules before anyone else flies it.
